About 35 miles east of Greater Orlando, Florida's Space Coast provides some 72 miles of Atlantic shoreline, ideal for alternating beach relaxation and space age coastal attractions with journeys inland to Central Florida’s world-class theme parks. Communities such as Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Palm Bay, and Titusville serve as anchors for Florida's Space Coast, home to the Kennedy Space Center, the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and Cape Canaveral’s Air Force Space and Missile Museum. Outdoors attractions include the 220-square-mile Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, with more endangered species than any other refuge nationwide, and Canaveral National Seashore, with wooden walkways crossing through sand dunes, sea oats and prickly pear cactus. The Space Coast boasts the Brevard Zoo, the nation’s only zoo with on-site kayaking, the Brevard Museum of Art and Science, with a quirky mix of Monet, Matisse, and Elvis memorabilia, and the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science, with collections from swarms of honeybees to items from early space exploration, plus recollections and recipes for coot gizzard, roast possum, and swamp cabbage. Cocoa Beach Pier stretches 840 feet over the ocean to serve as a grandstand for space launches, surf competitions, and seafood festivals. Port Canaveral is an increasingly popular departure point for cruises to the Bahamas and deep into the Caribbean.
